Wing Chun Workshop for Students at Warren Mead School
Banstead Wing Chun instructor Sifu Russell Benham recently spent the day teaching Wing Chun to over 240 children aged between 6 and 10 during a special visit to Warren Mead School. The event introduced students to the fundamentals of Wing Chun while also sharing important ideas about discipline, focus and self control.
Representing Banstead Wing Chun, Sifu Russell was joined by Assistant Instructor Steve Dare. Together they worked with multiple classes throughout the day, giving pupils a chance to experience practical elements of training in a safe and engaging way.
Introducing Wing Chun to Young Students
Throughout the day, students were able to experience some of the basic training methods used in Wing Chun.
Children practised punching drills on focus pads, explored controlled kicking exercises and learned how balance and posture play a role in martial arts training. These short sessions were designed to be fun, energetic and educational, allowing pupils to experience something new while remaining accessible to everyone.
For many students it was their first introduction to Wing Chun, and the response from the classes was overwhelmingly positive.
More Than Just Punching and Kicking
While the physical exercises are exciting for young students, the deeper lessons of martial arts are often the most valuable.
Wing Chun training emphasises calm thinking, patience and the ability to remain in control of your actions. During the sessions, Sifu Russell spoke with students about how these ideas apply not only in martial arts training but also in everyday life.
Learning when to act and when to remain calm is an important part of growing confidence and developing good judgement.
These are lessons that can support children both inside the classroom and beyond.
A Day of Energy and Enthusiasm
With over 240 pupils taking part across the day, the atmosphere inside the school was full of energy and excitement.
Students took turns striking pads, learning simple techniques and asking questions about martial arts training. For many of them it was a memorable experience and a chance to try something completely different from their usual school activities.
Events like this help introduce children to positive physical activity while also encouraging teamwork, respect and discipline.
Giving Back to the Local Community
Community outreach is an important part of what our Wing Chun schools aim to support.
Workshops like this allow instructors to share practical skills and ideas that can benefit young people, even if they never step inside a martial arts class again.
We would like to thank the staff and students at Warren Mead School for welcoming us and making the day such a success.
We are always grateful for the opportunity to visit local schools and contribute to the community in a positive way, and we look forward to any future ventures together.
