PURSUIT STEP – JUI MA

THE KEY CONCEPTS, TECHNIQUES, AND METHODS OF WING CHUN — MADE CLEAR

Short Definition

Jui Ma is the Wing Chun pursuit step used to chase, pressure, and follow an opponent while maintaining balance, structure, and centreline control.

ABOUT JUI MA

Overview
Jui Ma is the pursuing footwork of Wing Chun, a forward, committed step used to maintain pressure and follow the opponent when they retreat. It is not a rush or a lunge. Jui Ma blends structure, timing, and forward intent to keep the practitioner close enough to control the exchange without overreaching.

Purpose of the Step
The aim of Jui Ma is to advance safely while maintaining proper stance alignment. When the opponent steps back or tries to escape, Jui Ma allows you to follow instantly while keeping your centreline protected. It prevents gaps in pressure and ensures your attacks remain connected to your structure.

Structure & Positioning
A correct Jui Ma keeps the hips facing forward with both feet on along one path. The rear foot steps in before the lead foot extends again, allowing the stance to travel smoothly without becoming square or stretched. The weight stays centred, the knees relaxed, and the movement remains compact.

Using Jui Ma Under Pressure
Jui Ma works best when paired with contact or forward energy. After Lap Sau, Pak Sau, or a deflection, Jui Ma helps you continue attacking as the opponent moves away. Because each step resets your structure, Jui Ma prevents you from chasing with your upper body or leaning forward.

How It Connects to the System
Jui Ma is taught in Chum Kiu and becomes essential in Chi Sau, Gor Sau, and application. It works naturally with Jin Bo (arrow step), chain punching, and bridging movements. Jui Ma embodies Wing Chun’s principle of controlled pursuit, pressure without overcommitment.

Common Lessons in Jui Ma

  • Advance with structure, not speed

  • Keep the stance compact and aligned

  • Maintain pressure without leaning

  • Step only as much as needed

  • Coordinate hands and feet together

  • Use pursuit to close gaps safely
