ARROW STEP – JIN BO
THE KEY CONCEPTS, TECHNIQUES, AND METHODS OF WING CHUN — MADE CLEAR
Short Definition
Jin Bo is the Wing Chun forward “arrow step” that drives the body straight into the opponent’s centreline with structure, intent, and controlled momentum.
ABOUT JIN BO
Overview
Jin Bo is the committed forward step of Wing Chun, a direct, penetrating movement used to close distance and take control of the centreline. It is called the “arrow step” because it shoots forward in a straight, efficient line, allowing the practitioner to advance with power while maintaining balance and structural alignment.
Purpose of the Step
The aim of Jin Bo is to enter the opponent’s space safely and decisively. It allows you to bridge the gap, apply forward energy, and turn defence into attack. Jin Bo teaches commitment without recklessness, moving forward with structure rather than charging with force.
Structure & Positioning
A proper Jin Bo keeps the hips facing forward, the spine upright, and the knees soft. The step is small and controlled, with the foot sliding or stepping forward along the centreline. The rear leg drives the body without overextending. The movement must stay aligned so that the practitioner maintains balance even while advancing.
Using Jin Bo Under Pressure
Jin Bo is often used after clearing the line with Pak Sau, Lap Sau, or a deflection. When the centreline opens, Jin Bo carries you directly into striking range before the opponent can reset. It also helps regain distance if the opponent retreats. The key is timing, Jin Bo must follow the moment of opportunity, not force itself through resistance.
How It Connects to the System
Jin Bo appears in Chum Kiu and throughout Chi Sau and application. It blends naturally with Jui Ma (pursuit step), forward punching, and bridging. The step reflects Wing Chun’s philosophy of taking ground efficiently and maintaining pressure without wasted movement.

JIN BO Q&A
To enter the opponent’s space safely and directly, using structure and timing to take control of the centreline.
Fast, controlled, and direct, not heavy. The step should glide forward with intent rather than stomp or lunge.
It is used after clearing the line. Once a gap appears, Jin Bo steps in immediately to connect your structure to your strike.
