Overview
Yip Man (1893–1972) is the most influential figure in modern Wing Chun history. Through his teaching in Hong Kong, he preserved the system, refined its methods, and trained students who later carried Wing Chun across the world. His approach emphasised structure, directness, and the practical efficiency that defines Wing Chun today.

Early Life & Training
Born in Foshan, Yip Man began learning Wing Chun as a child. He trained under Chan Wah Shun and later under Leung Bik, receiving deep knowledge of both the practical and conceptual sides of the system. These teachings shaped his understanding of structure, centreline theory, and economy of motion.

Teaching in Hong Kong
In the 1950s, Yip Man began teaching Wing Chun publicly in Hong Kong. His Kwoon attracted students from many backgrounds, and his structured approach helped systemise the art. Through years of teaching, he trained instructors who would eventually take Wing Chun across Asia, Europe, and the West.

Influence on the System
Yip Man standardised the order of forms, refined Chi Sau training, and strengthened concepts such as forward intent, simultaneous attack and defence, and practical structure. His emphasis on simplicity and efficiency shaped the modern interpretation of Wing Chun.

Legacy
Today, most Wing Chun lineages trace their roots through Yip Man. His teachings continue through his students, grandchildren, and the many branches of Wing Chun that exist worldwide. His legacy is not only technical but philosophical, a commitment to honest practice, directness, and efficiency.
