PULLING HAND – LAP SAU

THE KEY CONCEPTS, TECHNIQUES, AND METHODS OF WING CHUN — MADE CLEAR

Short Definition

Lap Sau is the Wing Chun pulling hand used to draw an opponent’s arm off the centreline while stepping in to strike or control the line.

ABOUT LAP SAU

Overview
Lap Sau is a decisive pulling action that removes the opponent’s arm from the centreline while advancing with attack. It is not a grab-and-hold technique, but a sharp, committed pull that momentarily breaks the opponent’s structure, allowing you to step in and dominate the line.

Purpose of the Technique
The aim of Lap Sau is to pull the opponent’s arm off its defending position. By disrupting their angle, you expose the centreline and create a clear path for immediate counter-striking. Lap Sau works best when used with forward intent, pulling with one hand while striking with the other.

Structure & Control
A correct Lap Sau uses the wrist and elbow together. The pull is compact, straight, and controlled, never wide or circular. The elbow stays tight, and the stance supports the motion with forward pressure. The technique relies on timing, not strength; you pull just enough to break the guard, then hit.

Using Lap Sau Under Pressure
Lap Sau often appears during Chi Sau when the opponent’s arm becomes momentarily stiff, overextended, or disconnected from their centre. By pulling sharply, you remove their structure and place them on the back foot. Lap Sau blends naturally with Pak Sau, Tan Sau, and chain punching.

How It Connects to the System
Lap Sau is taught early in Wing Chun but refined throughout Chi Sau and Gor Sau. It appears in both Chum Kiu and Wooden Dummy applications. The technique supports the principles of forward energy, simultaneous attack and defence, and centreline control.

Common Lessons in Lap Sau

  • Pull sharply, not slowly

  • Keep the elbow tight to the body

  • Use the pull to create space for attack

  • Never hold or wrestle — pull and hit

  • Maintain forward intent throughout

  • Blend Lap Sau with stepping for maximum effect

Lap Sau Q&A

No. Lap Sau is a sharp pulling action, not a holding technique. The pull is momentary and designed to create space for a strike.

By pulling the opponent’s arm off the centreline, Lap Sau removes their defence and creates a clear line for punching.

Fast. Lap Sau relies on timing and structure, not strength. A quick, controlled pull is far more effective than a heavy one.
