Slapping Hand - Pak Sau

THE KEY CONCEPTS, TECHNIQUES, AND METHODS OF WING CHUN — MADE CLEAR

Short Definition

Pak Sau is the Wing Chun slapping hand used to clear the line by striking through the opponent’s arm, creating an immediate opening for attack.

About Pak Sau

Overview
Pak Sau is a direct, purposeful motion designed to clear the path for attack. Rather than “slapping” in a soft sense, Pak Sau cuts sharply across the opponent’s arm to remove resistance from the centreline. It is simple, efficient, and one of Wing Chun’s fastest bridging tools.

Purpose of the Technique
The function of Pak Sau is to break the opponent’s structure for a split second, just long enough to punch. It is not a defensive move by itself; it is an attacking assist. Pak Sau clears anything blocking your line, disrupts the opponent’s balance, and connects smoothly into straight punches, trapping, or forward pressure.

Structure & Angle
A correct Pak Sau uses the elbow and wrist together. The palm angles slightly inward, and the motion strikes forward, not sideways. The aim is to collapse the opponent’s arm just enough to take the line. The shoulder remains relaxed, the stance stable, and the movement small and explosive.

Using Pak Sau Under Pressure
Pak Sau works best when combined with forward intent. If pressure is coming directly into your line, Pak Sau breaks through it and replaces it with your own strike. If pressure angles inward, it can convert into Tan Sau, Lop Sau, or a punch. Timing is everything, the technique must be applied at the exact moment the line opens.

How It Connects to the System
Pak Sau appears everywhere: Siu Nim Tao, Chum Kiu, Chi Sau, Gor Sau, and real-world application. It works naturally with Tan Sau, Bong Sau, Fook Sau, and Lop Sau. Pak Sau is often the first touch in an exchange and one of the fastest tools for taking control.

Common Lessons in Pak Sau

  • Strike through the arm, not at it

  • Keep the elbow slightly forward

  • Use small, sharp movement

  • Maintain forward intent

  • Clear the line and hit immediately

  • Relax the shoulder and avoid swinging

Pak Sau Q&A

No. Pak Sau clears the line by striking through the opponent’s arm and immediately replacing that space with your own attack.

It must be sharp, not heavy. The goal is to break structure briefly, not to slap with force. Efficiency and timing matter more than power.

Pak Sau clears the line so the punch can pass straight through without obstruction. The movement should feel like one combined action.
