SI-FU – TEACHER / FATHER (MENTOR)

Overview
Si-Fu means “Teacher-Father”, a title that reflects both instruction and mentorship. In Wing Chun, the Si-Fu is more than someone who teaches techniques. They guide the student’s development, pass down tradition, and maintain the cultural and ethical foundation of the art.

Purpose of the Role
The purpose of a Si-Fu is to help students learn Wing Chun safely and correctly, while also fostering character growth. A Si-Fu maintains the training environment, sets standards, and ensures knowledge passes down the lineage accurately and respectfully.

Relationship & Responsibility
The Si-Fu–student relationship is built on mutual respect:

• The Si-Fu provides guidance, structure, and correction.

• The student trains with commitment and humility.
  The bond is not authoritarian, it’s supportive, disciplined, and based on shared growth.

Role Inside the Kwoon
Within the Kwoon, the Si-Fu:

• leads training

• sets curriculum

• ensures safety

• develops instructors

• maintains standards

• protects the lineage

A good Si-Fu teaches more than movement, they teach how to think, apply, and embody Wing Chun principles.

How It Connects to the System
The transmission of Wing Chun relies on Si-Fu. Every form, concept, drill, and method is preserved through them. They carry the responsibility of passing the system to the next generation with accuracy, respect, and clarity.
